This color sensor module is based on the TCS3200. It senses colored light with an 8 x 8 array of photodiodes; a current-to-frequency converter turns the readings into a square wave whose frequency is directly proportional to the light intensity. An Arduino or other microcontroller reads the square wave to determine the color.
