Resistor is only good to drop voltage if current used by circuit always stays the same. Use Zener diodes to drop voltage: For example: (ZENER Diode 5.1V 500 mW 5%) This diode will drop voltage by 5.1V and can handle 500mw. If you need more power, add 2nd one in parallel. Then it can handle 1000mw.
