DARPA Grand Challenge 2005 by Brian Mork
Five vehicles came across the finish line of a 137-mile course that included rock strewn desert, dusty wind, tunnels, and mountain two-track roads. After an early morning start, three arrived in mid-afternoon, one as the sun set, and the last one the next day after spending the night out on the course under a DARPA commanded pause.
I reported on the 2004 DARPA Grand Challenge in the October 2004 issue of SERVO Magazine, where only a handful of vehicles made it past the one-mile mark. A short 18 months after that competition, more than 20 vehicles covered appreciable ground. The spirit of the teams and the center of technology innovation was significantly different. This article reports on my experience at the qualifying runs and race day. Don’t miss the accompanying photo essay giving a lot more details.
